Pagans Sabotage Coyote Hunt

submitted to Earth First! Journal

In the early hours of Samhain, somewhere in an area commonly known as Michigan, some pagans gathered in the forest to remember their loved ones in somber ritual. In silence, the offerings were made, the small flames flickered, and those pagans remembered they were guests there on that land, and in this plane.

During that time some un-expected nocturnes had also arrived in a nearby field. Fortunately, before either groups presence was known to the other, the flames were extinguished, the talismans gathered, and the offerings left per the ritual. Onward those pagans went, slowly back towards where they came. Shortly into their travels their thoughts were interrupted by the artificial sounds of suffering ringing out across the field.

Coyote hunters.

Those pagans understood this as moment to act. Out came song and laughter, cutting through the cries of electronic rabbits. Soon followed by the curses of those who, on that night, were less interested in remembering the dead, and instead focused on tearing other familys apart. Their harsh words fell short as those pagans drifted back into the darkness. Later to hear the cackle of the still wild, still living, and still free coyotes.

Those pagans made it back safe that night, with the memory and echoed sounds of delighted coyotes to accompany the warmth of their loved ones.

Happy Samhain, from Some Heathens.
