All the Homes on the eKhanana Land Occupation were Destroyed Today

The eKhanana Land Occupation in Cato Crest has been subject to repeated illegal, armed and violent attacks by the eThekwini Municipality. A number of people have been injured in these attacks.

There are 105 families on the occupation. They are gathering courage by building, cooking, eating and resisting together.

Last weekend all the shacks were burnt. Today the 66 shacks that had been rebuilt were attacked by the Public Order Police, the Metro Police and the Anti-Land Invasion Unit. They arrived without a court order, and without warning and immediately began shooting with live ammunition and rubber bullets. Luckily no one was hurt today.

However they burnt all the shacks. Tonight people are outside in the open. But they are still on the land. They will start rebuilding tonight.

Confronted with a violent and criminal state we have not choice but to litigate to force the Municipality to cease its illegal and violent attempts to suppress organised urban planning and land reform from below.

The occupation continues.
